Care for your jewelry so that it will last a lifetime
Cleaning and Maintenance Tips
Gold, Platinum & Silver
Gold and platinum are very durable metals; however they can be scratched and damaged. Concentrated chlorine can harm gold, so we suggest that you remove your jewelry when going into a pool or the ocean, using a hot tub or strong cleaning chemicals. While gold does not easily tarnish, it does need to be cleaned. Hand lotion, oil, and normal wear will build up a dull layer of grime over time. Gold jewelry can be soaked in a warm bath of mild liquid detergent and water. After soaking it can be polished with a soft cloth, rinsed in clean water and dried. As a safety precaution, be sure to close all drains when cleaning your jewelry as it is easy for slippery wet jewelry to go down the drain. It is best to hold your jewelry in a strainer when rinsing to keep it out of the sink.
The matte finish Faye gives her gold jewelry is a surface treatment which over time will develop a burnished patina with normal wear. Some people prefer the burnished look. If you prefer the matte finish we will be happy to clean and re-matte your jewelry.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver is a precious metal and will occasionally require cleaning. Using a small amount of silver jewelry cleaner on a soft cloth, gently rub the silver several times. Rinse the silver thoroughly in warm water and dry carefully. This will remove the tarnish and dullness, keeping your sterling silver like new. Chlorine accelerates tarnishing and should be avoided.
Diamond Jewelry
Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substance on earth, but they do need care. With time, daily wear, lotions, cosmetics, dirt and grime can build up on the jewelry and affect its beauty. Gentle cleaning will help bring the sparkle back. The safest way to care for your diamond jewelry at home is with warm water, mild soap, and a soft toothbrush to gently remove any buildup on the stone. We suggest that you bring in your jewelry on a yearly basis to check for loose stones and have them professionally cleaned.
Colored Stone Jewelry
Colored gemstones vary greatly in hardness, durability, and sensitivity. It is common for colored stones to be treated to enhance their color. These treatments, while mostly stable, can make them more sensitive to light, heat, and chemicals. We recommend you only use warm water, mild soap, and an extra soft toothbrush to clean your colored stone jewelry at home. Do not use any chemicals or an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on these pieces. If you are at all unsure on how to care for your colored stone jewelry, we will be happy to clean them for you.
How to clean pearls
Fine cultured pearls are fragile but will last for generations if cared for properly. The natural coating (nacre) of the pearl is the patina that gives pearls their unique luster and character. The nacre is sensitive to oils, chemicals, cosmetics and abrasion. Lotions and perfume should be applied in advance and allowed to be fully absorbed before putting on your pearls. After each wear, the pearls should be gently wiped with a slightly damp cloth. Cultured pearls are strung on pure silk. Over time, the silk will stretch, weaken and become soiled. If you wear your pearls regularly, we encourage you to have your cultured pearls cleaned and restrung annually. Please feel free to bring in your pearls for us to inspect and have them re-strung if necessary.
